I just received a note that Frances Miller died last week at the age of 95. She was the dominant harp teacher in the Upper Midwest for decades, and the mother of Lynne Aspnes. She used her first husband’s name professionally as a memorial to him, as he died in World War II. She had many, many students, traveled many miles to teach in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Sioux Falls, South Dakota (one each week), taught many students at MacPhail School of Music, at the University of Minnesota, and scads more at home. She led troubador classes that brought many of us into harp playing and owning pedal harps. She owned many harps that she rented to students. She was quite devoted to the harp. She was very encouraging. I studied with her from 1973-1977.

Jared – thank you for sharing such a beautiful reflection at Mrs. Miller’s memorial service – spectacularly done.

How much of that force came from 8-plus cups of coffee every day? When she told me how much she drank, I know my jaw dropped. I think she had so much in her, it kept her going and going and going… and of course, she loved and believed in what she was doing. I wish I could have been at the memorial.

Yes, I think we were on some of the same student recitals she held at MacPhail.
