ParticipantWas wondering if I should buy this:
as my first harp. Bear in mind, I am a poor student, so harps above $300 are difficult for me to get a hold of. It’s just that I don’t think I could really handle waiting to save up more money to get a different harp.
Your opinion?

ParticipantThere has been a lot of discussion about these harps, my biggest quarrel with them is they are inconsistent – some are worse than others – so I would think buying one 2nd hand local which you could try would be safer than mail order.
see for instance:

ParticipantWow! I definitely like the look and sound of these, and the price is very nice too. I’m considering buying this, once they reply on how much the shipping would cost. I might end up getting the kit, although I have no idea how it’ll end up due to lack of woodwork experience.
Anyway, my question is how compulsory are levers for a beginner harpist? I play the piano, and I definitely love my flats and sharps. However, price is again an issue… and I’m just experimenting for now.
Thanks!

Levers- it really depends on you and the music you want to play.

ParticipantI have just noticed the time you are posting- what country are you in?

ParticipantAustralia, Sydney. I have looked on Craigslist…nothing. My local music store don’t sell harps either. Pity…

ParticipantAh, I can’t help from my own experience with that, however:
http://www.harpcolumn.com/forum/message-view?message_id=25200You might find a visit to Brandden Lassells interesting to get a better idea of different harp models.

Saving up for a Ravenna 26 (or rent to own if you can) or other higher quality affordable harp would be better than buying an instrument that would sound awful no matter how good you became at playing it.October 10, 2011 at 7:38 am #71163Rebecca Ching
ParticipantI’m going to keep saving until later. Might take a while though, since shipping to Australia costs almost as much as the harp. ):
