I just listened to Sara Cutler’s new recording of the Concertino for
Harp and Chamber Orchestra by Erno von Dohnanyi, on the Bridge label.
It is without question, the finest recording I have ever heard of any
harp concerto! It is one of the finest pieces in our repertoire. It
was edited most carefully by Lucile Lawrence, and this is the
performance she coached over the years, and is the most authentic. I
haven’t heard the others, but I am glad the piece is being taken up
finally. Her tone is voluptuous, silken, soaring, scintillating and
dynamic. It is not an easy piece to learn, and one should study the
orchestral parts, for the harp part doesn’t always seem to make sense
on its own.
