This is a great topic. There are some really touching stories here…I’m still learning, but when i get one I’ll post it here. : ) Amazing to think about how meaningful the music can be to people in need.

It was when I arrived to play in an orchestra, unwrapped the harp and the conductor said “ah, what a beautiful sight” and I thought he meant me, although in casual clothes and was momentarily flattered, until I realised he meant the harp! As for playing, I’ve had some good write-ups after tricky orchestral concerts such as Debussy’s Jeux and from Wallton’s Violin Concerto and Mahler 5, but comments can sometimes be a little cliched.

I’ve had a bunch of people tell me that they like to come and sit by me when they’re troubled or overwhelmed, just to feel some calm and peace (which is funny because I tend to play really fast tunes), and I’ve had people tell me that my recordings have helped them through rough times like the death of a family member.

    Sarah:

I had to look up Green Fields of France. I found several videos on Youtube…but no harp rendition. Here’s a guitar solo:

Can anyone recommend a harp arrangement of this piece?

An 8 year old girl with thick glasses said to me, “You play real pretty – when you’re not making mistakes.” It was said with no judgment and such honesty that I still laugh when I think about it!

You mean someone besides me makes mistakes?

My little 10 y.o. niece told me I played so pretty she wanted to fall asleep… totally without irony. She meant it as a true compliment 🙂

I have come to see that there is an intervention between the playing and the hearing of the harp and it is the visual beauty of the instrument. So play as well as you can and this magic will occur in the mind/eye/ear of the hearer. I find this helpful when coping with performance anxiety.
