What causes it? Does this happen to every harp and has your harp developed one? I’m just curious as to how often this happen to harps…

I’ve read that some bellying is actually desirable as the sound ‘opens up’…but does it stop at a certain stage, or is it only a matter of time before your harp literally burst open?

A good harp soundboard should belly up. If not, it is too thick and over built. Bellying is caused by all the strings pulling up on the soundboard. It will eventually stop which at that point it is said that the soundboard has “opened up”.
