The Rock City Falls Trio released its debut album, SIGNAL, on Aug. 28 on Adhyâropa Records. According to a press release, the album comes from the long-time collaboration between Alex Chang (electric harp and electronics), Jason Handron (string bass), and Adam Forman (drums) and features the trio’s contemporary cross-genre sound combining rhythms and elements from the musicians’ varied interests and backgrounds—from contemporary classical and new music to indie rock, jazz, and experimental improvisation. The ensemble’s work includes original composed themes and frameworks for free improvisation.
Chang says, “Improvisation is really important for us … listening and being in dialogue—knowing when to come in and when to pull back. And connecting with people and what is around you, your environment, your community. I think the projects we have worked on really reflect that and the idea of crossing divides and being open.”
The trio has been working on projects that involve community discussions and feedback in their process of creating their works. One example is Sonic Explorations in Troy, which the trio developed in 2025 with multi-instrumentalist and artist Manuel J. Perez when in residence at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. That project explored the history, present, and future of the city together with audiences. Another project is Re:evolution: The World at Play, a collaboration they are currently working on with Seattle-based multidisciplinary artist Carlin Ma, exploring humans’ relationship to nature and our environment.
