Magdalena Hoffmann, principal harpist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, has released her new album, Nightscapes, on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Both digital and physical versions are available from Deutsche Grammophon.
“In the music on this album, I wanted to use the harp to tell different nocturnal stories, to dance through the night and dream the night away,” Hoffmann says. “My instrument creates a special space for this nocturnal intimacy, but also for the fantastical and magical.”
Nightscapes includes nocturnes by Field, Chopin, and Clara Schumann, Nocturne for Left Hand Alone by American jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch, as well as Britten’s Suite for Harp, the five-movement masterwork with “Nocturne” in the center. In addition to the harp solo works and Hoffmann’s piano transcriptions that, in her words, “dream the night away,” Nightscapes also includes dances such as Tournier’s La danse du moujik from Images and Renié’s Danse des lutins.
