Welsh composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Cerys Hafana released their third album Angel on Sept. 26, making their label debut on tak:til / Glitterbeat. Angel is now available via Bandcamp. According to a description on Hafana’s Bandcamp site, the album features Welsh triple harp and explores influences from minimalism to traditional and avant-folk music, including Breton traditions. Hafana dampens the harp’s strings using blu-tac to produce a woody, muted sound. Angel alternates between vocal songs (all sung in the Welsh language) and instrumentals, including a trio of guest musicians: Ursula Harrison (double bass), Amie Huckstep (alto saxophone), and Lisa Martin (drums). The album was recorded during four days of live sessions in the Pembrokeshire studio of producer Owain Fleetwood Jenkins.
According to their website, Hafana is “a Welsh triple harpist and composer who mangles, mutates and transforms traditional music.” Hafana’s awards have included a shortlisting for the Welsh Music Prize in 2023, and the UK newspaper The Guardian named their self-released album Edyf one of the Top Ten Folk Albums of the Year in 2022. Hafana also recently released an album of piano pieces, Difrisg, on Instant Karma Classics. Hafana has appeared at festivals across Europe, including Green Man, Trans Musicales, Reeperbahn, End of The Road, and WOMAD.
