Glowing Harp announces 2021 competition

The Glowing Harp Competition has announced the repertoire for its 2021 contest, which will take place online. The contest is open to harpists of all nationalities and is divided into four categories by age. Applications must be submitted by April 1, 2021, and must include the following: a completed application form and video recording of stage one repertoire, a current CV, a recommendation letter, two photos, copies of scores, and a copy of the applicant’s birth certificate. The competition jury includes harpists from Slovenia, Ukraine, and France. Prizes include a performance with the Kharkiv State Philharmonic, a scholarship to the Vienna Harp Days, a Camac Odyssey harp, and multiple Camac harp accessories. Repertoire requirements are listed below.

“Debut” category (8 and under)

  • Two to four contrasting pieces, including “Cuckoo and Woodpecker” by V. Tikhonova
    (5 minute time limit) 

Category I (11 and under)

  • Two to four contrasting pieces, including one of the following pieces by V. Tikhonova:
    “Teddy Bear Walks for Breakfast”
    “Squirrel”
    “Hedgehog and Ants”
    “Rabbit’s Dance”
    “Humble-bee and Grasshopper”
    “Butterflies”
    (5–10 minute time limit) 

Category II (14 and under)

Stage I  (10–15 minute time limit)

  • A composition from the baroque or classical periods
  • A virtuosic piece written during the romantic or contemporary periods
  • M. Skoryk: “Memory”

 Stage II (accompanied by piano)

  •  Georg Christoph Wagenseil: Concerto for Harp and Orchestra in G Major 

Category III (18 and under)

Stage I (15–20 minute time limit)

  • A composition from the baroque or classical periods 
  • A virtuosic piece written during the  romantic or contemporary periods
  • E. Andreev: “Souvenir” 

Stage II (without accompaniment)

  •  G.F. Handel: Harp Concerto in B-Flat Major, Op. 4, No. 6 

Category IV (25 and under)

Stage I  (20–30 minute time limit)

  • A composition from the baroque or classical periods
  • A virtuoso piece written between the romantic period and the beginning of the 20th century
  • A work from the mid-20th century  
  • Special piece written by E. Andreev, available on Jan.1, 2021 

Stage II (recorded with piano accompaniment) 

  •  R.Gliere: Concerto for Harp and Orchestra in E-Flat Major (movement one) 
  •  Solo piece (choose one):
          M.Glinka / M.Balakirev: The Lark  
          F.List / A.Alabiev: Le Rossignol
