Clark appointed solo harpist of Royal Swedish Opera

March 6, 2023

The Royal Swedish Opera (RSO) has appointed Meredith Clark as its solo harpist. She follows Åsa Lännerholm in this role. Following a preliminary round by video submission, two live audition rounds were held in Stockholm in December 2021. After three finalists completed trial periods of about two months each, the RSO named Clark its solo harpist.

As a new member of the RSO, Clark says she anticipates a rich musical collaboration. “Playing for opera and ballet feels so much like chamber music to me,” Clark says. “To combine beautiful music with stunning visuals and storytelling makes me feel like I’m playing a part in something much bigger than I can ever achieve alone.” Clark says she is also excited to join the RSO because of its longstanding musical tradition—this year marks its 250th anniversary.

In addition to the musical aspects of her position, Clark says she is ready for life in a new country. “Moving to Scandinavia is going to be such an adventure; I’m really looking forward to learning Swedish and embracing the culture and quality of life.”

Clark is currently based in San Francisco and performs as a solo, chamber, and orchestral harpist. She is principal harpist of the Oakland Symphony and a member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. She has performed extensively with the San Francisco Symphony, including playing guest principal for concerts at Carnegie Hall. Clark earned harp performance degrees from The Oberlin Conservatory and The Cleveland Institute of Music, studying under Yolanda Kondonassis.
