German harpist Ekaterina Afanasieva recently released her eighth album, Histoire du Tango, featuring the music of Astor Piazzolla. Released on the Arpa Nueva label, the album includes Afanasieva’s solo harp arrangements of Piazzolla’s Estaciones Porteñas, Oblivion, and Libertango. Flutist Gabriel Ahumada joins Afanasieva for her arrangement of Histoire du Tango.
“In my opinion, the harp brings a new color and transparency to Piazzolla’s music,” Afanasieva says. “I wanted to explore … different emotional dimensions of his music—passionate, nostalgic, fiery, and deeply expressive. I hope listeners can feel the energy, intimacy, and nuance of Piazzolla’s world, experienced through the harp.”
Based in southwest Germany, Ekaterina Afanasieva performs internationally as a soloist and orchestral musician and is also active as a harp teacher and arranger, with recordings for the label Arpa Nueva.
Histoire du Tango is available on Apple Music. Learn more about Afanasieva on her website.
