I just patched my 5th octave C following your explanation, Carl. I looked up on how to tie a figure 8 knot from the web. Thanks so much for the suggestion, definitely save me from buying a new string for the time being. Although I must admit doing a patch for a 5th octave string is quite painful as they are so hard to bend and make knots from.
Well actually it’s only my local church’s group of musician, for the monthly performance…so not a real professional orchestra.
It’s ok Sylvia. A friend of mine apparently have a copy of the full score, so I can just write it out from that even though it can be a bit of a work.
Thanks for the info, Carl. They haven’t provided me with the specific details, but I imagine it will be a 1 day rental, max. 2 days (not sure if they are having the rehearsal the day before or on the same day). The concert venue is around 40 minutes from my house so it’s not that bad.
Mine is a Honda CRV. Dont remember the year…maybe 2009ish. Seats fold down, not removed.
My friend uses Honda Freed. Dont know the year but its pretty new, under 5 years. Seats also fold down and not removed, i believe.
I knoew it has been a very long time since this topic is active, but can anyone tell me where to get the American Harp Journal edition with Carl’s article on those 6 measures? I am learning this piece and would love to read it. Can anyone also tell me where to get the Salzedo edition? Thank you very much in advance.
Has anyone here looked at or tried Tonerow http://www.tonerow.com? It’s a new platform for learning music online and sounds really interesting. Would love to hear any reviews/comments from anyone who has tried it 🙂

Alyson is absolutely right. Playing your own harp can also feel different in a different setting. Everytime I play in a concert or orchestra rehearsal, it always feels a bit weird even though I bring my own harp. Good news is, it does get better the more you do it. I have also had instances where I have to play on different harps and now I find that I can adjust to them quite quickly.
I still cannot play as well as I do at home, of course and I also have the same problem as you. I can play fine at home, but in front of the teacher, it’s a disaster. But dont be stressed and give up right away, usually the 2nd or 3rd go of the piece during the lesson is better, as you adjust to the harp 🙂
So you are definitely not the only one with that problem, and I hope that is somewhat helpful.
My friend sometimes take her students whose level she thinks is sufficient, to some of her gigs and plays duet with them. That way her students can experience what it’s like before going out on their own. Whether or not she shares her pay with said student, I’m not sure. Perhaps it can also be counted as a lesson/experience for the student?
That way whenever she can’t make it to a gig, she has some students who are ready to go in her stead. She is not a harpist, but I imagine it can be applied to us.
I live outside the US and used to be a regular customer of Vanderbilt, until the changed their shipping policy.
They will only use courier for international shipping now, which costs around $30 for shipping alone..which is a bit much for me. So now I just buy music whenever I visit the US, or if I’m desperate enough I asked them to deliver it to my friend in the US and they will then forward it to me using regular USPS air mail.
Well, I am the opposite! No one has ever offered to help me even though I’m visibly struggling. But…once I was at an orchestra rehearsal and I was told to leave my harp there overnight as the rehearsal will start early in the morning. The next morning my harp was in the corner of the room and apparently they used the room for some party/function the night before. Luckily nothing happened to my harp.
