I too like Anna, feel the same way about playing in church. In fact I’ve had my harp for almost two years now and did not have the nerve to play solo in church even if I had a very simply piece to play. Another lady in our church got her lifelong dream of owning a harp just recently and for the first time on Easter Sunday we played our harps. She too is just beginning, however, we both had the same feelings about why we both owned a harp and one of the reasons is to give God the glory for our harp and to be able to play in church for specials and be a blessing to those that hear it. Yep, we were that brave, rather ambious I might add. Actually it was she who really encouraged me. During our practice time together, we struggled, and our fingers fumbled through alot of the church hymns. Not to mention all that buzzing that comes with not playing slowly and placing firmly. It doesn’t help either that a lot of the hymns require lever changing so we tried to pick hymns with none or one lever change. Quite frankly even if I can change the levers, whose going to remember to change the levers when they are so nervous playing. It really helps for both of us to play together just in case one makes a mistake the other covers. And it did work that way Sunday, when all of a sudden I forgot where I was on the music and stop for a brief moment and panicked and wonder, ‘WHERE ON EARTH AM I ON THE MUSIC.” As soon as I heard where she was at, I picked up. And my husband was recording all this and I thought “what a reminder when I view that video.” And it also turned out that when we played one of us played the melody and one played the bass clef. Probably that would work if two were playing. And yes we did make mistakes. Our congregation loved the harp and the music and were so encouraging. One guy even said, it brought tears to his eyes when he heard the harp during our practice time. I hope you can use your harp for God’s glory. EnjoyI do agree that you should take lesson from the onset with a harp teacher if you have access to one.
