LOL! Yup, unfortunately I get horrifyingly seasick, even with medications/wrist band thingys nothing really works & I avoid the water like the plague!
louise-vickermanParticipantlouise-vickermanParticipantWill trade harp for plane!
louise-vickermanParticipantJust keep in mind each & every harp always has its “own voice”, there are generalities with particular models that I have come to notice over the years but when trying out harps there will be one that will speak to you and respond to your own touch in a special way, keep an open mind and take along an extra pair of ears & fingers – preferably someone whose playing is in a similar style to your own or your teacher so you can get an impression of the sound away from the instrument.
louise-vickermanParticipantI own a 1971 Salvi Diana, I love this harp, it has a big warm rich tone & has been compared by a pianist to the harp equivalent of a 9ft. Steinway! At work I play on a 1999 Arianna and it too has a huge sound, it lacks some of the richness & depth of tone of my Diana but has a very clear and direct upper register which is what I was looking for in an orchestral instrument.
louise-vickermanParticipantGrandjany did the same thing with his “Rhapsodie”, took all the printed metronome markings down, some quite considerably!
louise-vickermanParticipantWhen I reviewed this piece when I was at Eastman, Kathleen Bride had revised metronome markings in her part directly from Mr. Grandjany himself, the beginning was marked down to 8th=63, so “D” (a tempo) would then match the opening tempo (63)
louise-vickermanParticipantAOPA was amazing, I learned so much and see so many similarities between flying and music.
louise-vickermanParticipantThanks everyone!
Don, I will no doubt be taking you up on your offer of a cocktail, Denver is definitely on my flying destination list since I have friends there already (in CSO) and I will always need to practice & keep up my mountain flying skills which are considerably more challenging than sea-level flying.
Brook, the WX here has taken a turn for the cooler, it was a record 74f on Sat. then the CA storm came in and I think it will stay cold through the week with highs only getting into the low 50’s by the weekend.
louise-vickermanParticipantVery cool, congrats! Have fun!
louise-vickermanParticipantWow Brenda, sounds like “This is the place” (apologies to Brigham Young for borrowing his quote!) for you, especially if you like to hike and ski – from my house in downtown Salt Lake, it only takes me 40 mins to get up to Solitude Resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon, I can both ski AND get to rehearsal in the same day!
louise-vickermanParticipantB.T.W… In Salt Lake City I am only 5 1/2 hours from from Las Vegas and we have a lot less rain than British Columbia (sorry Elizabeth!!!)
louise-vickermanParticipantHow about Utah? It has lakes, mountains, NO sticky hot weather, environmentally aware cities, universities, cultural activities and L&H West located right here in Salt Lake City!
louise-vickermanParticipantHi Audrey,
Check out Ann Heymann’s website:
She is probably one of the foremost exponents of the wire strung Celtic harp and I remember hearing her play in Glasgow, Scotland as a young student!
louise-vickermanParticipantPerhaps that’s how things go in China but I find it hard to believe too!
