Diane: This is a great idea. I think @[[susan-bennett-brady:User:Susan Bennett Brady]] wants to do it with her college students as well. It is on @[[hugh-brock:User:Hugh Brock]]’s list to make the journals private, or viewable to specific people. We need to implement “groups” to make it happen….hopefully within the next few weeks—oh Hugh?
Thanks for entering the piece in the library Niina! To tag it, just type the @ symbol before the name of the piece or composer. You’ll see a drop down menu where you can choose the piece. Then you’ll automatically link to the piece like this: @[[concerto-for-violincello-and-orchestra:Piece:Concerto for Violincello and orchestra (Delius, Frederick Theodore Albert)]]. Since we’ve tagged it now, this thread should show up whenever anyone looks at that piece in the future.

If you enter this piece in the library and tag it in your forum post, your question will be attached to the piece so future generations of harpists will be able to easily see the conversation. This is a great example of what we’re trying to do with the “pieces” library, in case anyone is wondering…. I’m sure anyone else who plays this piece would be interested to know about good markings!

Thanks for the input everyone! I thought I’d follow up to let you know I decided not to pursue this event with the students, largely due to the timing around the holidays.
This is always such a tricky subject and I appreciate all the viewpoints. I should clarify that when I mentioned a professional rate, it was the rate for one harpist. My thought (courtesy of my friend Jan Jennings) was that the client could pay the amount they would otherwise pay a professional, but instead of one harpist, they would get several student harpists. That way no professional would be “undercut” and the students would still benefit and perhaps be able to split the money. Since this was a group of my own private students, there isn’t a particular school or organization the money could go to, as some of you have suggested, which would otherwise be a great idea. In this particular case, the time of year and the logistics involved (travel) made me feel it was not worth pursuing, since it would also involve a lot of (uncompensated!) effort on my part.
Since this is a frequent scenario I hope we can continue to share more thoughts about the best way to handle it for students and professionals alike.
Thanks for your vote of confidence Saul! We do believe strongly in the value of a print publication, which is why we continue publishing Harp Column in a print format while many other small publications have switched to web only versions. This website has always been intended as companion to the print version and a way to showcase current events and news, which is why the current site isn’t working. We are working hard to build the best site we can and to continue bringing this (free) service to you.
Unfortunately pasting in a restricted article would be a violation of the copyright law, so we probably shouldn’t do it here

Nina: We worked on the site quite a bit over the weekend and my guess is you got the error pages as Hugh was updating the code. It happened to me once too. However, then they went away. Please let us know if you get any more, and what you were doing when you got them. A Youtube portlet is on our list….hopefully this week.

There are four songs for harp, flute, voice, and guitar by Stravinsky. I have the music somewhere but I’ve never actually played it. I do not think it is super difficult. Let me know if you want me to dig it up and take a look!
Thanks Elizabeth! I should clarify that I’m talking about the harp solo work, not the harp and violin duo. I should probably edit our library entry :-).
Well, I have tried to bite my tongue, but I’m afraid I just can’t after these last few comments. To be clear, the current site has to change because it uses antiquated software that makes it impossible for us to post news and event updates in a timely fashion. In addition to maintaining these forums that you all love, we also want to let harpists know about what’s going on in the harp community worldwide and that isn’t happening with the current site. So we have spent quite a lot of time building a site with lots of features that we think are really cool, but which you can easily choose ignore if you don’t like them. The new site still contains forums, and while they might look a little different at first, we are taking all your suggestions into account in an effort to design something that will work for you the way you want it to. Hugh is reading every request and working very hard in his spare time to implement them all. I’m sure he’d much RATHER be volunteering to register voters.
Thanks for the feedback all. Carl, all I can say is things change! Look at it this way: you can still use JUST the forum section of the new site, without all the other bells and whistles. We think if you dive into everything we have going on, you will like what you see. But if it’s not for you, then so be it. Hugh is working daily on making everything as user friendly as possible, so if there’s anything specific you would like, just ask. There is an entire forum on the new site devoted to website feature requests.
