really good response Carl. I memorize some by solfege, but mostly I analyze the whole piece first, using chord/lead sheet symbols and memorize it harmonically that way.

Thanks Barbara, I had forgotten about the Magic Road stuff. Right now she is working on Canon in D – the McDonald version.

I am assuming you have a studio policy sheet that you hand out to parents and students which they sign when they begin taking lessons from you?

I will quote you from my studio policy sheet and maybe it will give you some ideas.

    Lesson Cancellation and Make-up Policies:

“If you must miss a lesson for any reason, I require a 24 – hour notice when at all possible.

I love the Ibert Scherzetto as an opening piece, to warm up for even harder pieces, or as an encore or something. It is fun to play and fun to listen to and is one of those few pieces that even though I haven’t played it in a year or so, it only take a few weeks for me to get it back up to performance level.

For a beginner student, I have exercises that I have the students work on, scales, chords, arpeggios etc.

For advanced players, I use no technique book at all, but take sections of pieces they are working on, and create an exercise out of that.

My best recommendation for anyone wanting to pursue music as a major is to know your theory backwards and forwards, or at least have a very sound understanding of it before you enter college.
