OK… we did some research on the funny forum ordering thing. There is a bug with forum threading that we expect to be fixed soon. In the meantime we have turned *off* threading, so replies in a thread will appear in time order just like they did on the old site.
If anyone really, really wants threaded replies, we’ll keep looking for a solution; if not I think we’ll just leave it like this for now.

Hi all, sorry again about this.
The short answer is, the security certificate we have is valid for “www.harpcolumn.com”. It is *not* valid for “new.harpcolumn.com”. I need to change the links on the old site to stop pointing at “new.harpcolumn.com”… my mistake.
In any case if you browse to https://harpcolumn.com/lostpassword, you should be able to reset your password for the new site and log in without any difficulty. I apologize for creating confusion.

Yeah, we have one certificate for http://www.harpcolumn.com and a different one for new.harpcolumn.com — since the site is now responding to http://www.harpcolumn.com, I switched to that certificate. I should probably change the referral links on the old site to point to the regular domain. In any case, you can safely ignore that warning.

I’m reading the forums using Chrome on my Android phone and they seem to be working fine, navigation and log in included. We’ll definitely look closer at the Firefox issue though. Thanks for trying out the new site.
The forum migration and fixes are now complete, no more thread-scrambling (whew!).

Holy… why on earth would they glue them in?? I thought they were just a press fit. That seems sub-optimal… maybe @[[carl-swanson:User:Carl Swanson]] has an answer.

Hello Kay. It is almost certainly not super-glued in. Typically you can push these things out from inside the body with the right tool. The trick of course is that you need a replacement. Your technician should certainly be able to advise you on what to do, and I can’t imagine he or she would recommend you drive a 7-hour round trip to do it! Seriously it should not be that complex.

I just want to apologize again for the delay on the May issue. We take timely delivery of the magazine very seriously and it pains me personally when it goes wrong. Unfortunately, because of the very very small size of our press run and our staff, we do sometimes run into problems that a more mass-produced publication would not have. We had a particularly bad run of problems with the May issue with the result that the mailing house did not actually deliver it to the post office until May 22nd. Periodicals mail sometimes takes as long as three weeks to be delivered, so while everyone should have their issue by now it is possible some do not. If anyone would like a replacement copy mailed first class please email me (webmaster@) privately and I’ll make sure it happens today.

PublisherWhile I do think it’s really wonderful to offer free services to a charitable organization, I disagree that harpists should be willing to accept *requests* from groups that want music but simply don’t think they should have to pay for it.
I’ve been freelancing in New York for ten years and have received occasional requests to play for free. The most galling, without question, was an invitation from the wedding website “The Knot” to play FOURTEEN weddings in a row at the Empire State Building on February 14th as part of a special promotion. Cartage was available to get the instrument there, but despite the unbelievably grueling schedule they were proposing, pay for the harpist — any pay at all, even just enough to match the cartage they were willing to spend — apparently was not part of their budget. The contractor’s email went on and on about the “exposure” (how I have come to loathe that word) that I would receive if I chose to play, that I would be featured on local news as well as dozens of wedding sites, etc, etc. This is an example of a so-called “opportunity” that I would absolutely not hesitate to turn down with a strongly-worded email about the value of what we do and how much time, energy, and money we have to invest in our careers only to have organizations like theknot.com suggest that we should be thrilled at the chance to play fourteen consecutive weddings because NY1 might show one or two frames of us through the strings. (Sorry to rant, but that one made me really mad!)
Unfortunately, I have also heard of amateur harpists offering their services for free or almost-free in direct competition with full-time professional musicians who charge a reasonable rate, because they have another job that pays their bills, or are independently wealthy, or are just looking for an opportunity to perform publicly. This is something to which I strongly object. I feel that we have an obligation to have enough professional regard for each other not to undercut one another’s rates in an attempt to get work. To me, this is no different from crossing a picket line to play in an orchestra that has shut out its musicians during a labor dispute.
In short, freebies should be saved for events put on by family/very close friends, for your own church or school, or for fundraising events to which services can be properly donated, perhaps even for a tax deduction. If you receive a call from a stranger, acquaintance, friend-of-a-friend, or an organization with no charitable interest, you should charge no less than the average rate in your area. Otherwise, you are taking work away from those who truly make their living with musical engagements.
