You might consider the International Harp Museum, a 501 (c)3 not-for-profit, charitable organization devoted to preserving the harp and its history.

We have received the gift of several harps which have found a new home in our permanent collection and are always open to future donations. In addition, the IHM also accepts other harp related items such as photos, letter, concert programs, etc. We even have several performance gowns donated by a former member of the Angelaires!

The IHM provides many opportunities to perpetuate your legacy as a harpist and we already have several programs in place which deal with estate planning as outlined in the Planned Giving section of our website.

Our mission is “To Honor the Harp and Those Who Play It”

Please visit our website at http://www.InternationalHarpMuseum.org to see what exciting things the IHM is doing. Feel free to contact us at IHMinfo@InternationalHarpMuseum.org

If your harp has a different serial number than what is on the trunk you can locate it on the brass action plate.

    Chris,

Your harp is a Lyon and Healy Style 23 in natural finish. It was made June 1956. Two natural 23’s were built at this same time, #4678 and #4679.

By the way, if there is anyone who saw this harp while the owner was still alive, we would love to hear from you. Please email us at:

Yes Barbara, that is correct, it was painted at the time the harp was built.

The work was commissioned in 1987 and the owner wanted the painting to represent the four elements. She asked him to create a design that consisted of flamingos, tropical flowers, cascading waters and other elements of nature.

The board was painted by Hugo Matzenauer, a listed artist, muralist and book illustrator. Hungarian born, he later made his way to the United States.

The body of the harp is painted pink, which was also done at the factory.

After the owner passed away, her family contacted the International Harp Museum to see if we were interested in acquiring the instrument, and of course we were.

I’m afraid you really can’t get the full effect from the photos, the harp is stunning.

Even though the soundboard is fully painted, the harp has a wonderful sound. Full and rich and not at all hindered by the coating of paint.

The “Pink 11” currently at the International Harp Museum has amazing soundboard art. The work was done by artist Hugo Matzenauer.

    Barbara,

I’m happy you’ve brought up John Manno. His ability to play those complex pieces on the lever harp is astounding, not to mention the fact that he makes it look so incredibly easy.

We were so impressed with his performance that we are showcasing select pieces from his CD on our website at http://www.InternationalHarpMuseum.org

Anne Marie O’Farrell is an outstanding performer as well and I, for one, would really like to see more of this level of classical playing on the lever harp.
