ParticipantI don’t see how you could put a full-sized pedal harp on it. There is no “cradle” up at the time to support the harp. ??

ParticipantSounds like it will be a nice arrangement. Just be sure not to do any Marian tunes during communion in a Catholic mass. Liturgically speaking, communion should be reserved for music which puts one in mind of that part of the mass — the body and blood of Christ, and not tunes regarding Mary.

ParticipantNo, and it never will be. LOL…my friend who is also a harpist said, “They look nice in a Santa hat,” and I just smiled and thought….”Never in a million years.”

ParticipantWhen I was working as an organist in a Catholic church I played Bach all the time. There were no objections whatsoever. It’s commonly accepted nowadays.
Just probably you shouldn’t play, “Light My Fire,” I’m guessing. 🙂

ParticipantUsing words like “horrible” to describe someone’s technique when you are a teacher is just completely WRONG. Teachers are supposed to help build confidence not rip it apart. Find a real teacher. This is just totally unacceptable. Either this person is completely burned out, has the wrong personality type for teaching or just doesn’t know any better.

ParticipantIs your teacher giving you technical exercises? In my opinion, the best way to progress is by practicing well thought-out exercises given in the proper sequence. After working on technical exercises for the past 2 months (along with a few nice little pieces that are at my level) I have made great progress. I am convinced it is because the right exercises were given to my by my teacher at the right time,

ParticipantI pretty much said the same thing you are saying — except for the charging double part.

ParticipantIt is kind of sad to read that this is going on in the harp world, though I should have known it would. You should see how many people consider themselves VOICE teachers who haven’t the slightest idea what they are doing. But it sometimes seems that anyone who has had choir in high school knows how to sing — NOT, of course. I have a master’s in voice and am often amazed at the things people are doing to others

ParticipantThis is a very subjective question….individualistic depending upon financial situation, personal desires and future plans. Personally, as one who just started on harp but has a master’s degree in music, I wasn’t too pleased with the lever harp and wanted to move immediately to a pedal harp. Fortunately, I had gotten a really REALLY cheap deal on a good old Troubadour. Unfortunately, the levers weren’t much good anymore. Fortunately, my ears work well enough to retune a lot. Unfortunately (or fortunately, actually), I was taking lessons from a major city’s symphony harpist, and I needed to move up to a pedal harp rather quickly. I was advised to get the best I could afford, and I did. I couldn’t be happier.

ParticipantHi Carol,
I’m near Detroit, but I was just thinking…have you contacted local colleges with music departments

ParticipantHi Paul,
I’m not a harp teacher — I’m a harp student, but I have spent many years teaching voice, and I received my organ degree in my 30’s. I can distinctly recall working on the Franck Chorale in a, and after months and months of plugging away at learning it and making music out of it on the organ, I became completely frustrated. I wondered if I should even be considering working on such a piece. At one lesson, I kind of broke down a bit — not crying or anything — but I expressed my total frustration. I said, “I don’t think I can learn this piece.” And my teacher said something I will never forget. He said with total conviction:
