Ahh, darling frilly, haven’t seen you in ages since we went to sunday school together down by the old oak tree…

Hmm, as to Manly types of harp….I’d actually say that most celtic style harps are somewhat uni sex. But those Thormalen (sorry about the spelling) harps have a kind of bow like strength – like

Definitely the Salzedo. Also some of the Camac harps. An Athena, Atlantide, or Blue, but with plain soundboard. Also the L&H 100.

Nothing makes a harp look more girly than flowers and frilly designs on the soundboard. A Celtic design on a lever harp is fine, and the decoration on the Salzedo I like, but otherwise I tend to not like most soundboard decoration.

I know when I finally make the plunge to buy a new harp I am going to have to special order it. I never see harps I like in the finish I like with no decoration on the soundboard.

I’ve played one of Carl’s La Scuolas and one of his Semi-gilded Empires.

Thought of a bib Andy? You could get one in black to match a dinner suit when you perform…..

When did you play them, what were they like, do tell, do tell, I have never played one of his harps before (except his restored ones).

I’m amazed at the response to this thread! I do agree that there is a harp to suit every individual. I personally love the LH 23 and 17, and really the 23 isn’t all that feminine, but it does have flowers on the top. I kind of like the Gothic style harps, like the LH 26. It reminds me of the Erard Gothic, which is a beautiful instrument. The LH 3 is also very nice and stately. And I do think gold can still be ‘manly’ but for me it has to be limited. I think I might just have to go with the 100, especially since the one my friend has sounds amazing.

It was years ago now, my former teacher had the Empire, so I got to play it each week at my lessons.

    Jerusha,

Actually I’m glad you mentioned it. I have never seen one in person so I didn’t think of it myself, but from the pictures I have seen it is definitly a masculine looking harp. The picture on his web site of the one with the antique maple stain looks just outsanding.

Yes, well sometimes its fun to put aside the larger questions of gender etc and just have a bit of fun. I agree. I think Vince was responding to my rather vaccuous
