Do you have a different philosophy when it comes to teaching adult students vs. teaching students who are children?

I am an adult with flute background who has been taking harp lessons once a month for a little over a year.

I treat every student as an individual.

Unfortunately, some adults behave more like children, and children will behave more like adults. One big difference is, the children have goals to meet, to perform, to memorize music. Adults can drift from piece to piece without necessarily completing anything, so it can be harder to set goals, but sometimes they just happen and the student realizes nice things like, ‘Hey, I can memorize a piece!’

Hi Karen- As a trained musician, absolute novice on the harp, I find my teacher to be an excellent judge of what she needs to do and I need to do. She and I have come to a comfortable point of understanding my frustrations at wishing to be able to play everything perfectly the first time I see it, and her frustrations about my droopy thumbs and forearms. Sounds like you’re setting a course for yourself that works for you and your teacher.
