I’ve been living in Hollywood for a few years, surviving with just my lap harp and my Camac 30 string electric lever harp (haven’t been playing out really). I’ve recently joined a choir (I’m a soprano) and one of our pieces has a harp part.

So I have been thinking of shipping my harp out here from my parents’ house in Houston. I have a fiberglass shipping case that I bought from another harpist, I think she originally got it from L&H.

    Any recommendations for shipping companies?

The piece is playable on a lever harp, but neither my L&H Shamrock or my L&H Troubadour IV have enough strings. I can tune down the low C to get the B I need (don’t need that C), but I need the E below that.

I have thought about renting instead of shipping. I would be open to renting a lever harp as well….as long as it has enough strings. I technically only need the harp for a week or two…I can practice the piece on my Camac.

I have also considered renting a minivan or Rav4 & just driving my harp out here. But in addition to the cost of car rental, there is gas and hotels.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm….seems that borrowing or renting a harp in LA would make more sense and be much, much cheaper. Unless of course you want your harp for other reasons, besides this one gig. There are lots of harps and harpists in your area, and my experience is that harpists genuinely want to help each other out. Why don’t you make some inquiries through your local chapter of the harp society, or try calling or emailing Harp in LA? If you do decide to ship, you might call them for a recommendation about that, too. Good luck!

ALG Worldwide Shipping handles all of Lyon and Healy’s shipping to and from the factory, so they are accustomed to dealing with harps. http://www.algworldwide.com.
