Hey guys, I’m not a harpist but I’ve got a marketing project on harp. There’s too little available information online and I’ve learnt quite much reading posts from this forum, so I figured i’d post a few questions and hopefully you experts can help me out 🙂

1, Does one company or brand name have a commanding share of the current market? If so, why? If not, why not?
(I figured there isn’t really a dominant leader but a few major players? Lyon & Healy, Camac, Salvi, Venus? )

2, Can consumers appreciate harps’ quality as to reliability, excellence or both? Is prestige or status relevant?

Of course you don’t have to answer all of them, please just post whatever you think is relevant or might be helpful to any of the questions, and honestly i think you guys are totally authoritative.

    Cheers!! Love from Canada.

Are you looking at pedal harp or more widely? The companies you name make me think pedal harp only?

You are aware that Salvi and L&H are jointly owned?

Many buyers can appreciate excellence, but will not all have the same opinion of what excellence is. Reliability is, of course, judged by the company’s output decades ago as modified by anecdote and experience. Prestige (and romance) possibly is relevant – gilding doesn’t improve the sound.

Also prestige does not necessarily match with numbers of harps produced – Horngacher for instance has a lot of prestige (in Europe, I am not sure about elsewhere) but produces smaller numbers than, say, Salvi. It would be interesting to compare their production with that of Salvi’s priciest models though.

    Hi Tayce,

Can you go more into about L&H and Salvi being jointly owned? I can’t find anything online about it and was totally unaware of this! I just figured they were the two biggest competitors in the industry but also, I know that Salvi has a trade in program for both their harps AND L&H.

Les Arts Mecaniques, who are the parent company of Salvi, bought L&H in the late 1980s. It is mentioned at the start of Roslyn Rensch’s Harps and Harpists.
