ParticipantHi everyone! I haven’t been on the forums in a long while because I’ve been very busy at college, but I’m hoping a few of you will remember me. 🙂 I’ve been playing harp for almost 3 years (with about 10 years of experience on flute before I started). My first and only harp til this point was a Dusty Strings Ravenna 34 which I love, but I have also always wanted to have a pedal harp. I love the big sound, the flexibilty to play more chromatic pieces, and the potential to be able to play with an orchestra.
Last week I came home from my first year away at college and my parents gave me a pleasant shock: they had figured out a way for us to be able to get a pedal harp, which we thought would be impossible for our family to afford for many years. (The running joke was that I needed to marry a really rich guy at school, hahaha.) My mom had actually done lots of research on pedal harps in our price range and after talking to many harpists, decided on the Salvi Daphne 47 SE. It’s got the same number of strigs as a concert grand, but a few inches shorter and about 11 pounds lighter.
Yesterday, we drove to the Harp Connection in Massachusetts and I tried 3 Daphnes, 2 mahogany and 1 ebony. I eventually decided on one of the mahoganies (which was actually a favorite of the ladies who work there). I love the sound and it’s brand new so the tone will keep getting better! 🙂 I just got an email saying it should be delivered to my house in about a week! I feel like I’m dreaming and the anticipation is killing me!
Thanks for listenig to me ramble – I’m very excited and wanted to share the news! 🙂 I will try to post pictures of it when it arrives. It’s VERY beautiful; you can see the wood grain and the brass is really shiny!

ParticipantIMO you wouldn’t be human if you weren’t excited – or, at least, not the kind of human I would consider worth knowing. What wonderful parents you have! If they ever consider adopting a 56-year-old just drop me a line!
Will you be able to take the new harp back to college with you or are you going to have to look forward to coming back home to play it? I recently opened up a thread for the very purpose of ‘showing off our new harps’ – http://www.harpcolumn.com/forums/coffee-break/posts/62693 – as it seemed there were quite a few of us expecting new ‘babies’ around the same time, so you might like to come over there and post pics so all we new owners can drool together!
Also great news that you can now put off marriage for a few years 😉

ParticipantHi everyone! Thanks for sharing in my enthusiasm. 🙂 I am very excited! I am actually not sleeping all that well because of the anticipation, Sherj!
Lyn, a family friend recently gave us their minivan to help me move the pedal harp and my lever harp to my school in Virginia. It only has 83,000 miles on it and mechanically it works fine. There’s some rust underneath and they were told it won’t pass inspection unless the rust is gone. They were quoted $3,000 for repairs so they were just going to scrap it! My dad actually has a sandblaster and a truck lift so we will be able to repair it for the price of the time we spend under it. 🙂
I feel a little bit bad about my lever harp, though. I saved up for 5 years for it and spent many, many hours practicing on it. Now it’s going to be a bit neglected for the first little while that I have the big harp…. I’m still going to work on Scottish music to compete in Highland Games near where I live though. 🙂

ParticipantWhen I first got my pedal harp my lever harps got a bit neglected too, but eventually they all reached a nice equilibrium and all get used.
As I always like to say, the right tool for the right job. Sometimes the pedal harp is the right tool, and sometimes the lever harp.
But yes, you will be neglecting the lever harp for a while I have no doubt.
Congratulations and enjoy. It’s very exciting to get a new harp, and your first pedal harp is a big deal.

ParticipantIT’S HERE!!!! It showed up as a surprise delivery this afternoon!! (I say surprise because I was supposed to get a call from the shipping company to arrange when they could deliver it, and we never got a call, and we were expecting it to arrive at their facility *next* week.) But I’ve never had a better surprise in my life!!!! The delivery truck driver was unbelievably nice. He helped my dad carry the box up the stairs to our porch and into our living room for no extra charge. He said he’d never delivered a harp before and he was very interested in it. He actually stayed around after I signed his forms to watch me unpack it, and even asked me if I could play a little tune because he’d never seen a harp played live before. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the harp was still mostly in tune even after being shipped, so I played him a Scottish tune I’d arranged for a competition a while ago. When he left to make another delivery, he said, “I’m sure you’ll have a great weekend now, won’t you?” He has NO idea! haha 🙂
I’ve already played it for a while today and the sound is even better in my living room than it was at the harp store! I took lots of pictures and I will try to post them tomorrow. 🙂

ParticipantIsn’t it wonderful what childlike excitement we can all still feel with the delivery of a new harp! I can imagine how thrilling your weekend is going to be because I got my own new harp just a few weeks ago – it’s wonderful to experience that feeling of waking up in the morning and feeling so eager to get downstairs and start playing. I’m really looking forward to seeing those pics!

ParticipantOh no, I’m NEVER selling my lever harp. In fact, it will most likely be the harp I regularly take with me to perform until I can afford to drive myself. I put blood, sweat and tears into getting it and it really is a great harp. Most of the harpists in this area that I’ve talked to all say they’re jealous because they’ve always wanted a Dusty too! 🙂 I have to put new bass wires on the lever harp, so daily tuning should help it not feel too abandoned. 😉
I just can’t get over how big and warm the sound is from the Salvi! I can’t believe that it is only going to keep getting bigger, because it is a brand new harp. It was actually a favorite among the ladies who work at the Harp Connection. I’m going to have to make a recording and put it up here somehow so you all can see why! 😉
