    Hi harpists! I’m wondering what the preferred ground freight companies are for shipping a harp in its trunk cross country. Any special instructions I should know about (other than to be super careful, of course!)?

    Not knowing where you are located, you could contact a harp dealer or maker on the U.S. east coast (such as Virginia Harp Center), midwest (Lyon and Healy in Chicago), or west coast

    Also check with your insurance company–they may have special requirements, like shipping declared value, which is much more expensive than the basic rate, in order to cover the harp in transit.

    I don’t recommend shipping any harp in its trunk. They are not adequate protection. The carton from Lyon & Healy has much more padding all around the harp and is infinitely safer. The bigger problem is local transfer people, so rather than have door-to-door pickup, you should drop it off at their main shipping office, and try to pick it up yourself. I don’t think one company will be better. Unless there are specialists in moving instruments or antiques, and you can find one, I wouldn’t do it.

    I don’t know how much the cost is, but having a fragile instrument “foamed” is a great way to keep it safe.

    I think the stuff is blown around the instrument in some sort of wet or mushy consistency, and then it dries to a solid foam.
