    For the past two day’s I’ve been experiencing a sharp pain on the tip of my left middle finger where it meets the tip of the nail. It feels like a bruise and is very painful when I apply any pressure to the pad of my finger, which pushes the skin against my nail. I have been regularly practicing Mechem’s “Seven Joys of Christmas,” which includes a movement that requires tapping the soundboard with the fingertips. However, none of my other fingers have this same “bruised” feeling. There is no visible blood beneath the nail–everything looks normal, it just hurts.

    Any ideas on the cause and prevention would be appreciated.

    I get that if I cut the nail too short.

    Is it possible that it is from winter dryness? I get these cracks in the corners of my fingertips that are so painful, and have to use an ointment and bandaids to get them to heal.

    I also get that sensation if I’ve cut the nail too short, or sometimes if I’ve jammed something under the nail, or perhaps pulled the nail a bit too hard, maybe trying to pop a can top. I find putting a Band-Aid over the fingertip and nail for a day or two can helps keep me from aggravating it by pulling on it more. It usually heals very quickly, about as fast as nail grow (men’s nails grow more quickly than women’s, so your own rate my vary).

    Could it be a paronychia? It’s a type of infection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paronychia
