Adam Phan is the newly appointed principal harp of the New York City Ballet. “I think the biggest joy and excitement when playing with a new orchestra is always the first couple of notes that you hear, and I was so fortunate to be able to start the season playing the ballet Jewels, which features the music of [Gabriel] Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande,” Phan says. “Besides that, I’m very excited to play 50 nutcracker cadenzas in a row with this beautiful orchestra and get to work in the iconic Lincoln Center!”
Phan is an Anne Adams Awards winner, silver medalist at the Hong Kong International Harp Competition, and winner of the Carlos Salzedo Prize at the American Harp Society National Competition. As an orchestral musician, Phan frequently performs as guest harpist with ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Pittsburgh Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and Minnesota Orchestra. Phan is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where he received his artist diploma, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees studying with Nancy Allen.
