I’m doing a program this summer at Washington College in Maryland…I can rent a harp there, but I’d rather not. Does anyone know of someone who would be able to transport my harp (L&H style 100) from Manhattan to Maryland on July 5 or 6? Or if anyone knows of an Uber-like car service that will take me multiple states?

I don’t know of a harp uber service but there’s a great business idea.

I don’t know if Zip car exist in NYC but you can rent one and travel out of state. I rented a mini van in Philly and drove my harp to Virginia. For 3 days it cost me around $300 but it was worth it for me. It might not be feasible for you.

Sometimes if a Harp tech is traveling that route they can move it.

I would check the harp groups on Facebook and see who’s traveling, and who you would trust with your harp.

Wish I could be of more help. Hopefully other harpist way in with some additional ideas and assistance.

If you don’t have a parent or friend who can bring you out in a rented car, one option might be to take the train to Baltimore, Philly, or DC, and take Lyft / Uber from there (though it’s still a pretty long drive even from Baltimore, since there’s no direct route across). Note also that getting rideshare _out_ once you’re in Chestertown is not super easy. We’ve done it in the past without renting a car, and it’s really a pain. Or check with the organizers if someone else coming from NYC metro area can help. I think VAHC brings out some of their rental harps (could be wrong here), so maybe they could somehow help if they’re bringing out a truck, but again, coordination would probably be a bit tricky.

There are some shipping services (like uship) that will transport stuff like this, but I don’t think think they’d apply to / be useful to your situation just because I’m not sure if the timing and availability would be precise enough.

My child will be there this summer (though we are very far out of state, so using the rental pool as usual).

There are professional harp movers in Manhattan, see what they will charge you. Or you can try a car service that has station wagons.

You can fit your concert grand harp into a Subaru Outback, if you can rent one or find someone who owns one to help you. Just lay the harp in, with the rear car seats folded down flat, with the discs facing up, and the column will be behind the driver’s seat on the left. The Outback is like a station wagon and makes for easy harp loading and transporting. Ours is a 2024 model and it is great!
