The Oregon Symphony in Portland, Ore., has appointed Matthew Tutsky as its new principal harpist, following auditions held Jan. 8–10.

Tutsky says of his appointment, “I am so honored to be joining the incredible musicians of the Oregon Symphony as their principal harpist! There are many wonderful harp moments this year from Debussy’s La Mer to Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, and an array of new compositions, including a piece by my esteemed friend and fellow [Manhattan School of Music] alumnus, Andy Akiho. I’m also very happy to continue playing with Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theatre while teaching at University of Portland and Reed College.”

Tutsky previously held principal harp positions with New Mexico Philharmonic, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and Boise Philharmonic. Tutsky is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard’s Pre-College. “I want to give thanks to all my harp teachers, especially Deborah Hoffman and Emily Oppenheimer,” Tutsky says. “I’m forever grateful for their guidance and inspiration.”
