Stephen Dunstone’s original composition North Island Ramble is for two pedal harps. The piece unfolds in four continuous sections, each offering a variation on the opening 32 measures. Every section features a distinct key and time signature, presenting the melody in a variety of styles ranging from major to minor, a waltz feel, and even a touch of jazz. Scroll down for notes.

Note from the composer

This piece starts in a contented, strolling, F major-ish sort of way, and then at figure A the same music turns into a fast, light waltz. At B, it slows right down and goes into a soulful F minor before lightening up again at figure C, going back into 4/4 for a jaunty, jazzy final section. Don’t forget to swing the quavers in this last part!
