Notes from the Composer
“Pavane” (1887) is an earlier work of Gabriel Fauré, composed the year before he completed his famous Requiem. It is originally for orchestra (no harp) and chorus; however, the string arpeggio motifs translate well to the harp. The key has been changed from F-sharp minor to F minor for better sonority on pedal harp. Pedal changes and other performance indications are consistently marked, with two instances of the left foot crossing over to the right foot’s E pedal. It is a great addition to a late intermediate student’s lesson repertoire or a seasoned performer’s background music and an effective choice for funerals and memorial services.
