Ohh we love these Songs for Hope – they came out just as we here in NZ came out of our first lock down and were able to meet up for lessons and rehearsals. Six of my grade 4 level students purchased this music and have been learning all three pieces. The first one “Never Far Away” challenges the harpist to work in changing time signatures and has a beautiful, very singable melody line that I find myself humming for hours afterwards. The second piece “Every Single Breath” has been challenging to them all to accurately move from playing quavers and crotchets in the bass hand, to semiquavers (wa-ter-me-lon) and keep their counting consistent, and there are some gorgeous big chords to fit in too! The third piece “Another Day” looks a little easier, but this is deceptive, as including the emphasised notes (and getting the performance directions accurate) seemed to escape my students to begin with!!!) and there is a touch of syncopation in the last half that they all ‘forgot’ to count to begin with. This is a really lovely suite of music to be played as a solo, or in unison. And Eira’s videos of each of the tunes was very inspirational to my students – there is nothing as great as seeing the composer play their own music!

All of these works have been a joy to both perform and teach, with my grown up students in particular thoroughly enjoying approaching all three of these works.
In particular, Every Single Breath was a greatly needed piece of calm and kindness that came out at the right time of the pandemic to bring the player both hope and comfort.
