Christa Grix has made this solo harp arrangement of the hymn “The Glory of These Forty Days,” whose music was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for his cantata Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort, BWV 126. Grix uses rolled chords, octaves, and arpeggios in this arrangement to enhance the evocative melodies. Although this arrangement was composed for pedal harp, it can be easily adapted to lever harp by playing both treble and bass clef notes with the right hand and moving the lever with the left when a lever change is necessary. This hymn, originally known as “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort” (“Keep us, Lord, faithful to your word”) is a Lutheran hymn written by Martin Luther and first published in 1542. This hymn was likely written for a prayer service held in 1541 in Wittenberg against the perceived danger of the Turks. The text of the hymn, “the glory of these forty days,” is from a 6th century Latin hymn and refers to the temptation of Christ in the wilderness.
