Ooh, don’t tell my husband that. He wants whatever harp I find to last me forever! :0)
Actually, the experience was a little crazy. I finally found what looked and felt and SOUNDED like the most perfect harp on earth (to me). My technician recommended the company highly. It would normally been at a price I couldn’t have afforded, but since it had been sitting in a shop for a few years without a home, it was discounted. I truly loved it. Bought it… when I got home I realized that it had a couple of significant problems (the worst being a serious crack in the center strip). I guess the shop didn’t take care of it well…
The harp was sadly returned to a kind harp-builder who had no idea of the problems with it. I don’t blame him and I still think his harps are absolutely fantastic, I just can’t afford them now. And I’m back to square one.
That being said, the Somerset exhibitors’ hall was one of the most wonderful experiences of my entire life! I learned a lot too. And that can only be positive.

I went to the Somerset exhibitor’s hall on friday and I hope to go again tomorrow. I liked a couple of harps but I think the Stoney End Marion was a sound I was definitely intrigued by. I’d like to try it again… The funny thing is my husband didn’t think it was anything special at all. But I… Well, we’ll have to see…
I’ll try and post when the decision is made.
You should not ever have to sacrifice your instrument to play a few more minutes, or any amount of time for that matter. I agree with what the above posters said-stipulate ahead of time that you do not play in rain! These harps ain’t cheap, and there’s also sentimental value!
Alas, it was grabbed by someone else while I was trying to figure out some logistics. Hopefully something better will come soon!

I think some form of therapeutic use of the harp with voice may well be in my future, just not sure yet how to go about it… but I hope to figure it out some day not too far away :0)
Thanks Mae :0) I was just offered a 10-year-old rental harp, an Encore 34, for $1,900…it is apparently in very good condition… I’d rather not go with a ten-year-old harp, but what do you all think?
It’s actually not my first, but it will be the first I hope to play before buying, and the other real harps I’ve bought have been at least 19 years old upon purchase, whereas this one may be new or lightly used :0) Exciting!

Thanks everyone! Donna, your advice was a good bolstering of what I was beginning to sense-that, as you state, “You can’t really go wrong with either choice.”
I’m not really into the carbon fiber ones for some reason, they just don’t do it for me… SInce the Dusty is available near me, I think I might just go with that… Hoping to try them out soon! :0)
In any case I need a new harp because I need something portable… I’m looking at Dusty Strings’ Crescendo and FH34 and Blevins Meadowind. I want to know if one type has better lasting power–of course I know I have to treat any harp carefully!
