ParticipantI am pleased to share that, contrary to what I wrote on November 21, 2022, a historical recording of Guridi’s Viejo Zortizico does exist. It contains a sound recording of Mari Lola Higueras, the dedicatee of the piece and its first known performer. This previously unreleased home recording has now been restored and published to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its creation. Mari Lola Higueras herself oversaw the restoration and gifted this recording to everyone just days before her passing. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2fqm2_b61I

ParticipantDear Alison, as far as I know, there are no venal recordings of this piece by Zabaleta for sale. According to his programs, he played “Viejo Zortzico” by Jesús Guridi several times in his concerts. Perhaps you can find any TV or Radio recording anywhere that includes this piece. Let me know if you get it. In addition to Marisa Robles and Gabriella Dall’Olio recordings you can find more versions by other harpists (de Maistre, Padilla, Rayan, Mitchel,… and many others in Youtube to compare). Unfortunatly, there is no recording by Mari Loli Higueras, the first permofer for whom the piece was written and dedicated by Guridi, despite the fact that she recorded on the radio live direct from Spain to America around the 40s and 50s of the 20th century. I hope I have helped you to clarify your question.

ParticipantGuridi’s Viejo Zortzico was composed for Mari Lola Higueras in 1949-1950. This Spanish harpist asked him for writting a piece for harp that she could play in her recitals and she was who premiered the dance the 9th of June of 1950 at Madrid’s Ateneo. After that, the piece got fame thanks to her performances in France and the Uninted States and also thanks to Marisa Robles’s and Nicanor Zabaleta’s recordings and performances around the world. As Richard-Hagan suggests on January 17, 2013, 1960 is the date of the publication with UME of the available sheet music. UME meens Unión Musical Española. More information of this piece, this week at RCSM-Madrid.

ParticipantI have found she died on October 7th. So sad with this new and grateful to her for everything she taught me. She was teaching at the Brussels Conservatory and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena (Italy), as well as in many other places along her teaching career like vissiting professor or in summer courses. In September 1992 she gave a concert in Seville in the frame of the “1992 Universal Exposition”, as music ambassador of Belgium. She drove from Belgium to Seville with her Lyon and Healy, Style 23 Gold. On the way, she stopped in Toledo to give away some pieces to those attending the I European Symposium about “The Spanish harp since the Middle Ages and its projection overseas in the age of discovery”. Amazing program, crystalline sound, incredible thechnique and special musicality. In 2009, she attended the 17th International Harp Contest in Israel as a member of the jury. That year was also the 50th Foundation Anniversary of the contest and I was able to witness how she gave to Mr. Victor Salvi, for his harp Foundation and Museum, the original program of the 1rst International Harp Contest, where she won the 1rst Prize, and she had kept during those 50 years with the participant signatures. Her recordings were an inspiration to many harpists and will now remain as her musical legacy. Essencial is “La Caccia” by Niccolo Paganini, recorded live at the 1964 Geneva Competition where she also won 1rst Prize. I will miss meeting her again. R.I.P.

ParticipantMany of the “Morceau de Concours” works are published by Alphonse Leduc and you can find the titles on the last page of any printed work of this publisher.
Anyway, all these pieces were officilly adviced by the Conservatory, so you can contact with their library to get more information about each edition.

What such a good idea!
I’m afraid that I cannot attend your offer this summer, but maybe we could talk for any other date… What do you think about Spain?
Well, I’ll hope you’ll be fine and we could meet again soon.
