In my opinion, yes it’s fine not to place when doing things like Irish ornamentation like triplets. Whatever makes the end result sound smooth is the right thing to do.
Yes, sometimes there will be a very obvious choice for fingering, but other times 3 harpists could have 3 different ways of doing it. Again, the end result is for a smooth sound and smooth playing, so if that’s what you’re getting, then it’s right for you.
I think it’s best to try a piece first and figure out the fingering before trying to perform it. My music is all memorized, but even if you’re not memorizing, figure out the fingering, then learn the piece until you’re happy with it.
Interesting. I guess it depends on the music. With jigs and reels there won’t be enough time to think those thoughts, no time for awkward silent moments!

I was taught traditional Irish and was taught to keep hands close to the strings at all time. Pulling them away makes it harder to come back to the next bit you need to play and makes it harder to play quickly and smoothly.
It would definitely be ‘points off’ if you kept taking your hands away from the strings like that if you played at a serious competition.
I really like your analogy Kay of a walk through the woods / keeping those tunes under one’s fingers.
I lost a lot of my repertoire a few years ago due to personal reasons (combination of slight depression upon getting divorced, then travelling with my fiddle–but my fiddle repertoire flourished during that time!)
Kay, re: ‘playing for exposure’…my teacher used to say, “People have been known to die from exposure!”!
