I think he has sporadic phone and internet service. He told me the other night(we talked on the phone) that all the streets in his neighborhood were blockaded, that several houses on his street had been destroyed, that there were dead bodies in the street, that many people in his neighborhood had left, and that soldiers had tried to shoot their way into his house, but thank God failed. He has called me before when I could hear gun fire in the background. Why doesn’t the international community, NATO, the United Nations, or the Arab League do something????!!!!

    Carl,

A UN Security Council resolution that essentially demanded that Bashar al-Assad step down as president (dictator) of Syria failed recently.

I just received a long email from Basel. At first I was going to just paste the whole thing here. But I’m afraid that information in there could put him and his family at risk. All I’ll say here is that he and his family are now safe. They managed to get out of Homs, but had to leave everything behind. Basel of course is terrified that all his music and his two beautiful Venus harps will be gone or destroyed when he can finally return. But at least he is safe now. He said that he couldn’t get anyone to move the harps because it would have drawn attention to them and they could have been shot. Let’s hope that the place where he is now will stay safe.

Thanks for the update Carl. I’ve been worried about Basel while watching all the bad news and it’s a big relief to know he’s safe. It’s too bad about leaving the harps but those can always be replaced. Please let him know we’re thinking of him.

What a relief to hear he is out of Homs! The news is so terrible.

Please add my concern and good wishes to those of the others. He manages to post on Facebook at odd intervals (not using any surname), though I can’t read the language. But his recent change of avatar-photo speaks volumes: It’s a row of young girls holding what look like prayer candles, in an otherwise dark room. My hopes go out to him for a safe return to an undamaged home and two harps waiting and ready to be played.

    Bonnie
