The evensong has more of a “therapy” tension.

With a harp the size of the Brittany, what you want to do is find a stool that raises it to the correct height.

I bought a lap bar for my Eve and it works really well. There is also a a shoulder harness you can wear. I have both but the lap bar is easier for me. A stool wouldn’t work very well for me as I am very tall. I don’t want to have to lean down, so it would have to be a very high stool. I prefer the lap bar.

Hi! I have a Sony End Esabelle in cherrywood, their cross strung lap harp with a 3 octave range, which I built from a kit. It was, and probably still is the only cross strung available as a kit. Really a great little harp, which I practised on for 18 months until I built my first Latin style cross strung harp. The Esabelle has a nice tone, with good volume, and high string tension, tho I tuned it 3 half tones lower to get the lower string tension to play Latin style. My Latin harp is about 50 % louder, as well as brighter in tone.

So, yes, I would recommend Gary Stone’s harps, going on my Esabelle (unless you play Latin style).

    Hi to all again!

Just a point of concern. I read somewhere today that zither tuning pins can start to slip and not hold tune after 10 years or more, whereas tapered pins by their nature, do not. My Esabelle has zither pins, fitted to a cherrywood

Nope! My Eve is from ’93 and has zither pins. They are as tight as can be.

I got my Eve in ’96 and the pins are quite tight. I recently started renting it out to a new member of our group. she doesn’t have a tuner yet, so we tune it each week when we meet and it hardly needs adjusting. I’m glad she is getting played more often, but I could never totally part with her!

    Briggsie,

Where did you get the lap bar for your Eve? Does the Harpsicle one work for it?

I’ve got an Eve I just bought used–it’s 7 years old and in lovely shape. No slipping pins, stays in tune well, just got C and F levers installed. I love it.

I haven’t been at all pleased with the Harpsicle brand lap bar.

Re zither pins…here’s an interesting article on them from Wm. Rees (maker of the Harpsicle, as well as pedal harps).

Duh…I forgot to give the link (it’s been that kind of day!).
