One thing to keep in mind as you research the prices of harps is what accessories are included as part of the price of the harp.

I didn’t get a chance to evaluate the bass on the 34.

Good point Jennifer regarding the extras. I have only found one seller http://www.harpcenter.com/ . That gives a free extra set of string with

I think it’s Leigh who has the Eve, Ken.

Yup, I’m the one with the Eve. The strings are closer together than
they are on the larger Stoney End harps, which is good for my short
fingers, but might be too close for someone with bigger hands. I know
my husband complains about that when he gives it a try now and then.

Ken, where are you located? I got my Eve at Song of the Sea in Bar
Harbor, Maine. Of course prices have gone up, but I got the package
deal – harp, Zen-On tuner (last time I saw one it cost $100.00), padded
case, extra set of strings and the Sylvia Woods’, Teach Yourself book
for less than the cost of just the harp in today’s prices.

If you aren’t on the East coast, it may not be a cost effective alternative for you.

We had our first rehearsal after the holidays this morning and one of
our members is selling one of her Jay Witcher harps for $1500.00. I was
tempted, but it only has 26 strings (C to G). It does have a lovely
sound which is very even from bass to top. I don’t think she has a case
for it, it was wrapped in a blanket this morning.

    Cheers,
    Leigh

I also have an Eve which is a good little harp, resonant, very (maybe overly to my ears) bright and mostly consistent sound (the top and bottom string are, as usual, less good).

I live a few miles outside of Pgh Pa 15147.. i sent a few of the main harp dealers a request for any sellers in this area with no response from them as of yet..

While I love lap harps, I think you really want a floor harp just from what you have said in your posts.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I think buying a lap harp well be fine for me for now. Being If I do find a floor harp in the spring or summer after being able to try a few. Then I can all ways sell the lap harp on Ebay for pretty much the same price I paid for it. I just did that with my Noteworthy Harp. It sold in a half hour after I posted it there. I’m surprized no one is trying to sale there harps there. I have sold a number of insturments that way and never had a problem. Specially a harp.. There are “none” there listed by private owners.. Strange..

Any one see or play the Lyon & Healy Ogden Harp yet? That looks pretty sweet for the price..

Plus with having the lap harp.. I well have something to play for the few months while the harp is being made. The biggest part of having of having a lap harp for me. Is being able to play out on the back porch swing in the summer months. So a lap harp for me well always be used even if I just use it for doing mindless finger exercises while watching a movie in the evening..

The Ravenna 26 base is 13″ at the widest point. The Ravenna 34 base is 15.5″.

Anyone play the Dusty Strings Allegro 26? Guess it more expensive over the Revenna 26 because of the solid wood? Ken

Now, for what it’s worth, the Ravenna 26 isn’t really a lap harp.

Yep.. Perfect to snuggle up on the couch with. Weather i get it first or after a floor harp. Think it is a good thing for mindless playing in the evenings or where ever around the house. Ken

That would probably rule out the Ravenna 26 then.

I have an L&H Ogden and I love it. The resonance is great, the best

I have a Ravenna 34 which I love with all of my heart, and a harper friend of mine has a Stoney End Lorraine.
The Stoney End sounds brighter, while my Ravenna sounds warmer and darker. The Ravenna also resonates a lot more, which means for some pieces you will have to do more damping, but the effect is very dramatic indeed.
Getting around with my Ravenna is easier because of the drop down leg; she has to take the legs on and off her Lorraine. However, in the case the Lorraine feels a little bit lighter (this could just be in regards to bulk).
They are both excellent harps! I think her Lorraine sounds very ethereal.
