For those looking for a station wagon, you might try the Mazda 6 wagon. In the Harp Column’s last harpmobile review in 2004, we fit a full size pedal harp in the back. At first glance the wagon looks so small you wouldn’t guess a harp would fit, but it did–with some room to spare!

Diane: Good luck with the Suburu–I do think it is a good choice for someone like you who is OK with a smallish car. We never rave about it in the Harpmobile review because compared to most of the other cars we look at, it doesn’t hold as much stuff. But if it works for you great. Another small car some of you may want to consider is the Toyota Prius. I haven’t tried it myself yet but Elisa Dickon has one and she says it fits her 85 CG just fine. A student I know just got the Pacifica, which is definitely the wagon I’d look at if I wanted a wagon right now.

We are in the process of planning our next harpmobile review for this fall, so keep telling us what you want to see!

Actually, I went to a Mazda dealer to test drive the 6 wagon before heading back to my Subaru dealer for a repeat purchase.

I think that Volkswagen is reintroducing the Rabbit for 2007.

What about Volvo? Do they still make station wagons? They used to be a popular choice, though some models were a touch narrow.

One more thought, while it would be difficult to have someone make a harp tray for you, what might be not difficult is to take an old harp trunk (people seem to always be wanting to get rid of these), take the lid off of its hinges, and use the bottom portion as a tray to set the harp into, strap it in, and load on it’s side or column-strapped to the wall. It might work as well. It is the same principle.

I am so happy to hear everyone’s reports for harpmobiles, it is such a huge $$$$ decision and we all need as much info as possible.
When your harpmobile has to serve as a multi-functional schlepmobile (especially with 3 kids) your needs are different. I LOVE my Toyota Sienna XLE but I am happy to hear the Honda Odyssey is such a good choice as well. My husband is a road warrior in his job and has had great luck with Toyotas in terms of reliability, minimun repairs, and comfortable ride. I am a shorter person and I need to feel comfortable driving long distances with adjustable back support, good sight lines, and easy console accessibility. Having all the bells and whistles and the COOL navigation system makes “gigging” a lot easier and a lot more fun . I love my stereo system and have been known to really crank it up when flying down the freeway to a gig. Having been so practical my whole career, it is amazing to have a great harpmobile that simoultaneously serves my domestic life so well. The best harpmobile is the one that suits your needs best and getting a great deal on it makes it all the sweeter.
Now if we could just get the price of gas to come down so we could afford to drive them we would be doing great. Happy car shopping everyone!

I tried out a toyota camry wagon (’94) sunday and it fit, although took more than one person to get it in because of some funny bar across the back.
