The New World School of the Arts (NWSA), a performing arts conservatory for high school and college students located in Miami, Florida, has appointed Laura Sherman to its faculty in harp and music theory. “I am excited to build a new harp program for both high school and college-age harpists, as well as teach music theory courses, at this premier school for the visual and performing arts,” Sherman says. “One thing that makes the NWSA special is that music students study alongside talented dance, musical theater, and visual arts students, creating an immersive creative experience for all. The school’s excellent orchestra, weekly private lessons, and comprehensive music classes give students a uniquely in-depth education. I am honored to join their esteemed faculty.”
Sherman holds four advanced degrees in harp performance and music theory. Of her teaching philosophy she says that she draws on “decades of diverse experiences as a freelance harpist and educator in New York City and Miami… creating a supportive and inquisitive environment that uniquely nurtures each student.” Sherman will continue to teach harp and theory through her online studio, as well as harp orchestral studies at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, harp and theory at Miami-Dade College in Kendall, and perform as principal harp of major orchestras in South Florida. Sherman is also a Harp Column Music artist and a contributing writer for Harp Column.
Students at NWSA can earn a high school diploma, an Associate of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and a Bachelor of Music degree in programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, Music, Theatre and Art & Design.
