Report from the World Harp Congress, Sydney

Alfredo Rolando Ortiz leads a class at the World Harp Congress, Sydney
July 30, 2014

The Congress in Sydney was totally incredible. Not only were some of the biggest stars in the harp world there, but in concerts one after another.

Remy, Naoko, the Isabelles, DHC, Sivan, Alice!  Speaking of Alice Giles and her amazing Australian team, they were delightful! Great players Down Under, and so many of them! We heard some fabulous playing by Australian harpists we rarely are able to hear. Saw and heard Kim Webby’s 100K harp made of a special beech tree found in New Zealand, and attended a lovely cocktail party given by a Chinese double strung harp company at the Taronga Zoo. The final concert at the Sydney Opera House was very long but included two concerti and a piece for Six Harps that was very reminiscent of Mahler. No sleep,  had a wonderful concert with new Sydney jazz sidemen who were so talented and too much fun!  My theory/harmony class with Jaymee Haefner was packed and we had a delightful time singing and playing with the group!

So many new Aussie harp friends and loved the city and it’s people. They are truly terrific and it was a well planned and superbly executed Congress!  Can hardly wait for 2017 in Hong Kong!
