Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, has appointed Amy Nam to its faculty, beginning this fall. “I am honored to join the renowned faculty at Luther College. I am delighted to work in such a tremendously warm community of faculty and students who value musical and academic excellence so highly,” Nam says. “My desire in teaching is to nourish students’ musical joy and curiosity, to help students solve problems with confidence and creativity, and to aid students in establishing a technical foundation that will enable them to master their dream repertoire.”
Nam describes the opportunities for harp students at the college. “Luther is quite unique because about one-third of the college’s student body participates in music in some way! With one of the largest undergraduate music programs in the country, there are ample opportunities for majors and non-majors to play in ensembles, take lessons, and audition for scholarships. The orchestra tours internationally every four years, and the famous ‘Christmas at Luther’ concert draws an audience of about 7,000 people each year.”
Nam also teaches at Mt. Calvary Academy of Music in Excelsior, Minn. Nam holds a master’s degree in harp performance from McGill University, where she studied harp with Montreal Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Jennifer Swartz, as well as a master’s degree in composition from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied harp with Kathleen Bride. She completed her undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University, where she studied harp with Marian Shaffer and graduated with first honors as the Blair School of Music Founder’s Medalist.
