Kathryn Andrews appointed to harp faculty at Montclair State University

January 26, 2021

Montclair State University has appointed Kathryn Andrews to its harp faculty. “I am incredibly honored to join the faculty of world class musicians at Montclair State University as an adjunct harp professor alongside André Tarantiles,” Andrews says. She adds that the New Jersey school has been thriving during the COVID-19 pandemic. “They realize the importance of performing together in person and have been making this happen safely throughout the pandemic.” Andrews says the harp program will focus on versatility. “I want harpists to come out of the program feeling certain  that they can tackle any project thrown their way. I think it is incredibly important for musicians to be versatile on their instrument.” She believes students should feel confident enough to take on new challenges such as jazz, contemporary music, and musical theater while “being equally as comfortable playing traditional repertoire and performing in an orchestra or opera pit.”

Andrews served as principal harpist for the 2018 production of Carousel on Broadway. She has subbed regularly on Broadway for Wicked, Hello, Dolly!, CinderellaThe Fantasticks, as well as The Radio City Christmas Spectacular. She has also performed with numerous pop artists including Florence + The Machine, Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, and Clay Aiken. She is the co-founder of Duo Scorpio, a harp duo that has commissioned many new works for two harps.

As an educator, Andrews serves as co-director of the preparatory division of the Young Artist’s Harp Seminar. She earned master’s degrees from The Manhattan School of Music and Mannes and a bachelor’s degree from The University of Delaware. She teaches private students in New York and New Jersey.
