Heaven Fan named harp professor at Notre Dame

July 17, 2019

Heaven Fan has been selected to join the faculty at University of Notre Dame beginning this fall. “I am thrilled to be part of this world–renowned institution,” says Fan. “The music department at University of Notre Dame not only offers students extensive training by distinguished faculty and guest artists but also many opportunities for student performances and collaborations.”

She aims to build a vibrant harp program on campus. “I believe that a well–rounded harp program is essential for today’s harpists in this diverse and ever–changing world.  With the current harp course offerings and development of advanced ones, I would like my students to lay a solid foundation technically and musically while at the same time encouraging them to develop their unique individuality.” Fan plans to bring in guest artists and encourage creative collaborations with composers. “I also hope to make more connections with the local community by offering outreach opportunities.”

In addition to her new position at Notre Dame, Fan is on faculty at Anderson University (Ind.), Saint Mary’s College, and the Masterworks Festival. She has performed internationally as a soloist and collaborates with composers on projects that feature both eastern and western instruments. She received her bachelor’s degree with highest distinction in both harp and piano from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith in Australia, and her master’s degree, artist diploma, and doctorate from Indiana University where she studied with Susann McDonald.
