University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) has appointed Gréta Ásgeirsson to its faculty beginning in the fall of 2024. “I’m eager to grow the harp program and support the next generation of musicians within the welcoming and inspiring community of the UMD School of Music,” Ásgeirsson says. “The School of Music is a special place where we’ve cultivated an atmosphere that encourages students to explore, push boundaries, and discover their unique musical voices.”
Ásgeirsson currently serves as the principal harpist of the United States Air Force Band, Washington, D.C. In addition to her teaching roles at UMD and Washington Adventist University, Ásgeirsson is also the harpist with the American Pops Orchestra and has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Sinfóníuhljómsveit Ísland (Iceland Symphony Orchestra), Boston Ballet, Portland Symphony Orchestra, and National Philharmonic. Ásgeirsson has been featured as a soloist with the Air Force Band at the 2019 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic and 2023 Spring Tour of the Northeast, the 2022 American Harp Society National Conference, and the 2015 Lyon & Healy Summer Series.
Ásgeirsson has presented masterclasses and talks at Ball State University, Boston University, Indiana University, University of North Texas, SUNY Potsdam, and The People’s Music School in Chicago. Additionally, she has served as an adjudicator for music competitions and evaluations for the American String Teachers Association and the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras.
Ásgeirsson holds a Bachelor of Music from Boston University, where she studied with Ann Hobson Pilot and Jessica Zhou, as well as a Master of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts, where she was a student of Sarah Bullen. Following her studies, she served as the principal harpist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.
