The 72nd ARD International Music Competition in Munich has announced the winners in the harp category, following four rounds of competition held Aug. 28–Sept. 6. Tjasha Gafner of Switzerland took home first prize, as well as the audience prize. Lea Maria Löffler (Germany) and Alexandra Bidi (France) tied for second prize. Alexandra Bidi also received the prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned piece by Édith Canat de Chizy.

First established in 1952, the ARD International Music Competition takes place annually in Munich. It is named for the association of German public radio broadcasters which hosts the competition. Each year’s competition features a different set of instrument and ensemble categories, which means harpists only have the chance to compete every few years. Previous harp winners include Agnès Clément (2016), Emmanuel Ceysson (2009), Anton Sie (2004), and Isabelle Moretti (1983).
