Everyone learns at different speeds so it can be hard to judge what music to tackle next. I have been playing for a couple of years and am learning Frank Voltz’s Celestial at the moment. I was lulled by the first couple of pages with lots of repeating motifs, but then it has taken me ages for the next couple of pages with lots of rolled chords and big left hand stretches. I would say you would need more time to build up skills before tackling Celestial. I don’t know Dreaming of You. I did find that Above the Clouds (another Frank Voltz piece) was a lot easier to learn and very pretty; it is now part of my permanent – if limited! – repertoire so I would recommend you try that rather than Celestial.

Thank you Lyn, I remember seeing your harp when you first posted.
Sylvia I am looking at a 38 to 41 string lever harp and I play purely for fun on my own, not as part of an orchestra or group.
Angela/Patricia the possible difficulty of resale is something to consider but my plans are that I will keep this harp for a very long time so the other issue is that it needs to be a design/style that I will still really, really like in 20 years!

Sylvia good luck with the Zoom. I haven’t tried it with different settings but I do like the mini tripod. Interesting that you can hear yourself turn it on and off, maybe you have it set more sensitively than mine. I also like the ease of use for plugging in the USB cord and downloading to the computer.

    Hi

You didn’t lost me but it was the weekend and I went away! I have done 3 little sound clips as tests. One is 50cm in front of the harp, 2 is 3m in front of the harp (complete with a couple of dog woofs!) and 3 is 20cm behind the soundbox. I used the same music in each for comparison. This used the internal mic on the Zoom and it was standing on the small tripod that comes in the accessories pack.

I’ve got a Zoom H1 http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/h1/ which is excellent and has a really good sound quality. Amazon sell them for around $100. I got an accessories pack for mine as well with a case, mini tripod and some other bits and pieces.

in reply to: Dusty Strings Ravenna 34 or Pilgrim Clarsach #77175

I’ve got a Pilgrim Clarsach that I’ve had for over 10 years and it is a beautiful harp. Last night my 8 year old niece was visiting from the UK (we are now in Australia) and she played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on it and got really good resonance although of course her finger tips did hurt a bit after a while but that is to be expected with anyone until the fingers toughen up. It was her first time on a harp and she had no problems with the tension.

Thank you Tacye, that sounds quite straightforward. I’ve got new wire bass strings to fit as well so I wanted to tackle the whole project in one go – should keep me out of mischief for a while!
