Thank you for your concern. I do feel like it’s expensive for a first harp, but I want to play because I love the sound of the harp, and if I don’t like the sound as much, I might not enjoy it as much.
It’s the pedal harp that I like and the Prelude and Ana seem to have a close sound to it.
I will ask about renting, but some places say they only rent out smaller harps.
You’re not the only one to mention that it’s a lot of money for a first harp, and It’s making my doubt myself. This is such a difficult choice!

I will, I just wanted some opinions in the mean time though lol. What do you mean by warmer and brighter?
Would you consider celtic harps to be bright and pedals to be warm?
I just measured my car. It will fit, but the front seat would have to be folded down for the Prelude 40, which would mean my teacher wouldn’t be able to go with me.
I will go by train to have a look at it and was planning to go with here a couple of days later to buy a harp.
Do you think I should buy it without her? It has good reviews, but it will be my first harp and I wasn’t sure if if I should.

You’re right about the passenger seat. I might be taking my teacher with me though. However, when it stops raining I will go and measure my car lol. I will get the train to London to look at it and if I like it, I’ll return with my car.
I really can’t wait. I’m obsessed and can’t stop thinking about getting a harp lol.

Well, I would need to pick it up from the shop and if I ever get a job where I need to rent away from home, I would hate to not bring it with me.
I found out that I can fold the back seats down though, so I’ll measure it tomorrow.
I would love to look at lots of different harps and rent, but I have just graduated and am searching for jobs. My current job is voluntary, so I have no income- just savings. Because of this, I am trying to avoid lots of travelling and when I get a job, I will save up until I can afford a pedal harp (and to go looking for one :D). A trip to Wales is very appealing though!
As for the type of music. Well, pop, classic and celtic- more classic than celtic though.

You have helped me a lot. It would be good to go for the Troubadour for the sake of it’s size. Then when I move to a pedal harp, I could keep the Troubadour as a small harp- however, I might want a more celtic-sounding one instead by then.
The Prelude would be a better choice as when I’m more experienced and have saved, I can sell it and buy a pedal.
However, I have a Toyota Aygo, and after looking at the Prelude dimensions and the Aygo’s it seems I wouldn’t be able to fit it 🙁 lol
Lol it wasn’t a harp, but when I was a child and played the violin, I would have to walk from the prep school to the senior school’s music department. Sometimes if I started walking too early, on the way, I would put the case down and talk to my violin haha.
(I used to believe that my toys and violins were secretly conscious like on Toy Story :D)

Thank you. They sound really good. I’m not far from the channel tunnel, but it would still take longer than if I went to the shop in Wales. Well, it’s my first harp, so I suppose I should settle for one near by. The Lyon & Healy ones do sound nice. It would be better to get one second hand, but they don’t really lose their value do they?
I don’t think there is. There are barely any harp players near me. I had a look online for second hand ones, but the only site that shows up is their own.
I emailed them just in case to see if they sell in any other shops, but I don’t expect to receive a reply until Monday.
I had a look at the Telynau Teifi website and you’re right. They have such a nice sound, but the journey there is an extra 3 hours :(. It would be 5 hours driving one way, and it wouldn’t be fair to take my teacher all that way lol…. I really do like them though.
Edith, what was it you liked about the Troubadour? Did you think it has the nice sound that the Prelude and pedal harps have?

I did a currency converter. If VAT doesn’t affect it, a Prelude 40 should be around £3165.
An Ogden 34 is around £1886. It doesn’t sound as nice as the Prelude but I prefer it to other lever harps. It’s the nylon sound that I don’t like on lever harps.
A Trabouder 36 VI is around £2717 and only going from Youtube videos, this sounds just or almost as nice as the Prelude.
What are your opinions on these three harps?

I have decided to look at Holy Well as well. I have been doing some researching and listening to different harps on Youtube.
So far, the lever harp that I like most is the Prelude 40. It seems to have the nicest sound.
However, I can only find the price in USD, and I’m expecting the price to be completely different in GBP because of tax. Does anyone have an idea of how much it may cost?
Also, do you think it’s too much for a first harp?
Thank you. I did buy the ABRSM music theory book, so I’ll just continue reading that. That book by Sylvia Woods does look good. I’ll have to buy it when I know how much my budget will be after buying the harp lol.
