I played on a harp that had a set of Pirastro strings and absolutely fell in love with the the sound. So, I’ve been trying to find a reliable website that sells pirastro harp strings, but I am at a loss as to what type to get, what is the best, and of course what sounds the best. Is there only one specific type of Pirastro harp string? What website do you use to get your Pirastro strings?
You can get Pirastro guts or nylons from The Harp Connection or you can get Pirastro nylons (1st and 2nd octaves) from Lyon & Healy.
I personally prefer Pirastro nylons in the top octave because they seem (to me) a tiny bit heavier and give me what I think is a less “plinky” sound and a better regulation. Like other nylons in this range, you get extra length, usually enough for 2-3 uses, and they wear really well.
Salopian, in England, is the only place I know that has the heavy-gauge nylon Pirastro strings. The medium gauge is not that much better. After about six months they get looser. Which type you use depends on the age of your harp, right, Carl?
Thanks for all the info! A friend of mine said that she was going to buy a set but it cost $1,000. But she was lucky enough to find an entire set for sale on ebay for just $55. Do you know why Pirastro doesn’t advertise the harp strings on their website, though?
